Victorian Walking Dress / Afternoon Gown

This first costume is a Victorian Walking (or Afternoon) Dress from around the year 1860. I had a pattern to work off of but as with all patterns, this one had to be tailored in specific ways to fit the individual correctly and is designed to be worn with a corset. Foundation garments are very important for all clothing!

This one took the longest to create as a whole costume piece as it includes not only what is seen here, but also the undergarments.

The full list of garments created for this costume is:

  • Gown
  • Bonnet (modified)
  • Ruffled Petticoat
  • Hoop Skirt
  • Pantalettes (bloomers)
  • Fingerless Gloves & Ladies Reticule

Bonnet Detailing

The bonnet was a purchased plain felt form. This had to be cut down for the wearer and reassembled with both its original ribbon and new ribbon from the dress. It was then further decorated with feathers, pins, and lace.
According to some, this is far too tasteful for some of the true Victorian Styling of the time of 1860.

Regency Ball Gown

This is a costume based on a costume found in the Kyoto Costume Institute Collection Book "Fashion, History from 18th-20th Century."

It is a Regency gown made of what appeared to be sari material. Having a sari on-hand, I fabricated this gown.

This was done without a paper pattern, but draping on the dress form and referencing other somewhat similar patterns in books.

Day of the Dead Skirt

This is a skirt that was roughly drafted from an existing skirt. (The existing skirt was measured but not cut into.)

It has a lining for the outer part of the skirt as the skull fabric is rather more transparent than I like, as well as a slip that has the bottom edge of tulle peeking from below.

It has a zip closure and functional (and invisible!) pockets. The bow is also detachable with a pin.
